E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter - 28th April 2025 - Mondays and Open Guard Adventures

Hi Team,

Hope you have had a great weekend and got to enjoy some sun!

New Classes Starting Today

Today marks the start of Monday classes being added to the schedule, these classes will run from 18:00 - !9:00, and will add a third Fundamentals class to the schedule, allowing for a deeper progression through topics and more opportunities to train!

Two more classes will be added next week, with our schedule changing slightly to accommodate them, but classes will still be every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Topic Of The Week: Open Guard - Collar & Sleeve / Supine Guard

This week we're continuing with our Open Guard, focusing on Collar & Sleeve grips and Supine guard (Lying on your back). Learning these positions will give you even more options to play from, and they'll combine nicely with the Seated Guard skills we working on last week. The goal is to help you start connecting your open guard variations together for a more fluid, adaptable game and finding which positions feel more natural to you!

Community Dinner - Thank You

Big thanks to everyone who came out to our first E17 BJJ Community Dinner last Friday- it was great to see everyone off the mat, sharing some food and laughs together.

Eyes open for our next event!

Thinking About Competing?

A few of you have mentioned an interest in competing, no pressure at all for any members to do so, but if it's something you are considering, feel free to chat with me after class. We'll be picking a date soon for a local competition that we can attend as a team for support and experience.

Although competitions are nice to win, often the greatest benefits come from the increased focus, dedication and mindfulness we put into the run up to the day. The result on the day does not matter as much as the effort and and skills gained in preparation!

BJJ Tip Of The Week - If You Want Good Jiu Jitsu, Ask Good Questions

Don't be afraid to ask questions- whether it's about technique, a concept, or why something isn't working. Good questions lead to a better understanding, and coaches (and upper belts!) are usually more than happy to help. Just make sure you're asking after class or during drilling - not mid-roll when someone's trying to armbar you!

Hygiene Reminder

We want to keep E17 BJJ a safe, clean space for everyone to train.

Quick Reminder:

  • Please keep your nails short (hands and feet)

  • Only bare feet on the mats - flip flops/sliders off the mat always

  • Make sure to wash your Gi after every session

See you on the mats later today,

-Mouncif
